Dogs Chasing Trucks

Filed under: Animal Stuff — admin at 8:16 pm on Sunday, November 30, 2008

Why do dogs chase trucks? Growing up I had a Husky Dog named “Jerry” that chased the mail trucks every time they came to the house. I would be playing sports with my best friend and as soon as the truck would be coming close, Jerry would start running as fast as possible towards it. So many times I thought that he would just run right into it, but he never did. As soon as he got close he would turn real fast and start running right next to it. His bark was so deep and loud and the driver did not know what to do. As soon as the truck pulled into the driveway the driver would just sit there and beep the horn until someone would come out and see him. One of us would walk up to the truck and he would roll down the window and give us our mail or package. He mentioned over and over about how mean our dog was, and we just agreed. The best part about Jerry was that he was harmless. He would never attack anyone and was the sweetest dog anyone could ever have. At least Jerry got some good exercise in when he was chasing the trucks. Pets are so great and the memories will never go away.

Have We Had Enough Yet?

Mathematics is a funny science. We often think of it as the last bastion of good old reliable logic. That is, mathematics is often perceived as a dispassionate science. There is no movement to save endangered unsolvable equations. There are no picketers to prohibit future mathematical research and there are no math or geometry bars peppering the landscape so that mathophiles can feed their addictions by the cup full. Yet, mathematics quantifies and predicts some of the most irrational and emotional human (particularly western) behaviors. It knows and can predict the behavior of the consumer.

The bell curve shows us that upon introduction, the population at large generally rejects a thing, a phrase or a concept. Over time, with continued exposure, whether that thing is good or bad it will gain acceptance by the masses. Over even more time, it will loose favor and only a few “die hards” will hang on to it. What mathematics does not tell us is why the behavior exists and what triggers the changes.

Okay, I can accept a natural life cycle. The problem I have comes at the peak usage point and just before it. Why can’t we just say, “I have had enough,” before something becomes over used, over done or just plain abused? Why are so few people willing to grapple with the idea that the planet is not a ball of never ending resources before we are in an imminent life-threatening crisis? Why can’t we pay enough attention to our children before they become corrupted youths? Why are we compelled to consume the last bite? These questions are one in the same. Only the context is different.

In the 70’s, someone had this brilliant idea to put glass balls on either end of a string and make a game out of using inertia to cause the balls to slam together over and under the hand holding the string in rapid succession. Where I lived, they were called “click clacks.” They were eventually banned because frequently enough, the glass balls shattered. Children were seriously injured. Who couldn’t see that one coming? The balls were GLASS! Everyone saw it coming.

Why did they become so popular with the obvious consequence so, well, obvious? Because, they were pretty and the danger was too thrilling to resist. The rising anxiety as the clacking became louder as the balls struck harder and harder. The titillation of waiting for the loudest crash of the balls and waiting to see if the glass really would splinter into the crowd and onto the user was breathtaking. Sales were at their zenith just after the potential danger was announced and up to when they were banned.

Either beauty or danger by itself can drive us beyond reason. Together they are a compelling pair. We are told all of our lives to be ourselves. How many people who say that believe it? Relatively speaking, no one does. Proof that no one does is in the billion dollar cosmetics industry. Proof is in the billion dollar diet industry. Proof is in the success of Brad Pitt, Sean Connery and Humphrey Bogart movies. Beautiful men do uncommonly well even when they lack any discernible talent. Bankable men are beautiful and dangerous.

There are strong indications that our desire for the beautiful and the dangerous is hardwired in our genetic coding. I can accept that; besides, I have seen almost every Sean Connery movie ever made and I know why. Still, we like to consider ourselves superior to the beasts because we can choose to override our genetic programming with our intellect.

If intellect and compassion are the gifts that make us reign supreme over the land and the beasts, then because of intellect and compassion we are surely charged with being good stewards. We learned that in the first Spiderman movie. You remember, when Peter Parker’s uncle tells him with great power comes great responsibility.

Surely, we had a way of knowing this before Spiderman. The preponderance of the evidence says, “no.” Women have let the media tell them they are ugly and imperfect, that they need to be continously “fixed”. Cosmetic companies offer women a solution for this condition, makeup to use everyday that will slowly poison them. Women are the givers of life and nurturing. They are inherently beautiful - no matter what they look like. Inside women know this and still they let the media transform that knowledge into a small imperceptible light inside them. In too many women, that light is extinguished altogether. (See anorexia, bulimia and every woman who makes a living working a pole.)

We let corporations make us fear odor so much that when they offer us cleansers and perfumes made of cheap toxins, we take it. No questions asked. We allow limited resources to be squandered on archaic Pavlovian responses to fictitious threats to our emotional and social survival. In the mean time, we let the true threats to our physiological survival slip into the darkness. Where they become the bogeyman.

The bogeyman is a slave to corrupt and powerful masters. He is trotted out at their whim for their own best interest. After serving the highest bidder, the bogeyman returns to the shadows. The bogeyman lives in the milk of women at the Arctic Circle because of the air and ocean currents. The toxic brew they nurse their children with comes from the waste of the industrialized world. They are the canaries in the coalmines and their songs have been silenced.

The bogeyman lives in our prepubescent children whose bodies are developing faster than we have seen before. Could it be the ingestion of meat laced with growth hormones? When I was a child, I didn’t know anyone with a food allergy. Today, you can’t take 2 steps without tripping over someone with a food allergy. Maybe, they aren’t really allergic to the food. Maybe, they are really allergic to the herbicides, pesticides and other concoctions that come co-mingled with the food. The bogeyman lives in wars that kill our children over scarce resources and the power to allocate them.

In short, (I know it’s a little late for that) I think it’s time we as a culture say, “when” not because the “next best thing” has arrived but because we have had enough.

P.S: If you’re looking for some sexy math, check out M theory.

Great offer 15000 dollar at a serious loan rate of 6.9 percent

Filed under: Credit, Financial World, Loans + More — admin at 2:29 pm on Thursday, November 27, 2008

14.7 percent interest rate may come along so equitable but will it stay immutable after you have to return your loan.

Be sassy today to inspect if you have a nice special offer or if you don’t with the moneylender that offers you a money loan. Analyze to see if the bank who you a credit loan is right. It makes no difference if you live in Eagan Minnesota or in Florissant Missouri a secure online analysis will prohibit you often . A merchant bank in Norwich Connecticut or so may have a total completely different actual rate of interest for a 20000 dollar bank loan then a moneylender in Longview Texas and that makes a big clear gap in your weekly pay offs. This is why now you really need to check and examine if you can have a bank loan at a solid percent rate. of the banks wil show you a interest rate that looks middling but feels mischievously or so after some time. At this moment you can check out rates of interest quickly at websites and ascertain if there are other sneaky conditions you should be aware of.

Lavender : The Purple Panacea

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 3:31 am on Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Lavender is wholly spent with us, for to perfume linen, and the dried flowers to comfort and dry up the moisture of a cold braine(Parkinson)

Lavender, the once popular English garden herb, was used extensively as a perfume, but the versatility of its oil has made it a remedy for ailments.

History

In classical times, lavender was widely used by the Romans and Libyans as a bath perfume. This was probably how it derived its name from the Latin word Lavare, which means “to wash”.

In Spain and Portugal, lavender is used to cover the floors of churches and houses on festive occasions, or make bonfires on St John’s Day, when evil spirits are said to be abound.

The Arabians made use of lavender flowers as an expectorant and antispasmodic. People in France and Spain used to hang the flowers upside down in a closed bottle in the sunshine to extract the oil for dressing wounds.

Ecology

Lavender is a shrubby plant native to the mountainous regions of the Western Mediterranean. It is widely cultivated in France, England, Italy and even in Norway. Now it is also grown as a perfume plant in Australia. The scent of lavender is light and mild with a floral scent and woody undertones, and its oil is clear with a mild bitter taste. It has fresh and clean attributes that create a pleasant and soothing ambience. The scent is found on most parts of the shrub but the essential oil comes from the flower.

The lavender grows to 1 to 3 feet high with short, irregular stems covered in yellowish-grey barks with numerous straight, slender, broom-like branches. The leaves have the opposite characteristics of being sessile, linear and blunt. The flowers are produced in terminating, blunt spikes from the young shoots, on long stems. The spikes are made up of rings of 6 to 10 flowers. The flowers are short-stalked, purplish-grey, five-toothed and hairy.

Health Notes

The calming effect of lavender works well on suppressing mood swings. Its mild aroma helps soothe anger and relieves mental stress. The sedative effects are ideal to aid sleep and relieve headaches caused by anxiety. The mild characteristic of its aroma creates a balancing effect on the central nervous system and helps reduce depression.

Like the eucalyptus, lavender is also used as an antiseptic and painkiller. It is able to accelerate the healing process of wounds and burns. In addition, it also works as an insect repellant and relieves stings and insect bites. The oil, in cotton wool, when tied to a little bag and hung in a room, is said to keep flies away.

Although not an anti-inflammatory, lavender has healing properties that help promote cell growth especially for the skin and is good for removal of acne, athlete’s foot, fungal growth, swellings, scarring and stretch marks.

Fitness-related Benefits of Massage

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 8:47 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Ask someone their reason for getting a massage and you’re likely to hear “because it feels good”. We all know that a massage can relieve stress, help to make sore muscles feel better and even reduce anxiety, but can it help us achieve our fitness goals? Research shows that the massage you get to relieve stress can also have a positive effect on your muscle-building capabilities and fitness level.

1. Massage improves circulation and general nutrition of muscles. This appears to be the most valuable fitness-related benefit. Massage is accompanied or followed by an increase interchange of substances between the blood the tissue cells, which increases tissue metabolism. After a muscle is exercised, vital nutrients must be supplied in order for it to increase in size. Massage maximizes the supply of nutrients and oxygen though increased blood flow, which helps the body rebuild itself.

2. Massage improves the range of motion and muscle flexibility. This results in increased power and performance, which helps you work efficiently and with proper intensity to facilitate the body’s muscle-building response.

3. Massage helps to shorten recovery time between workouts. Waste products such as lactic and carbonic acid build up in muscles after exercise. Increased circulation to these muscles help to eliminate toxic debris and shorten recovery time.

4. Massage can help prevent over-training. Massage has a relaxing effect on the muscles, as well as a sedative effect on the nervous system. This can prevent over-training syndrome which has limiting effect on muscle building.

5. Massage may aid in fat loss. According to some research, massage may burst the fat capsule in subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. In this way, combined with proper nutrition, massage may help in weight loss.

6. Massage helps prevent and even heal injuries. By stretching connective tissue, massage improves circulation to help prevent or break down adhesions. Massage also influences the excretion of certain fluids (nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur) necessary for tissue repair.

While a massage won’t build muscle directly, it helps to facilitate the body’s rebuilding phase following a workout and influences muscular growth. Getting a massage is just as important as regular workouts and supportive nutrition for a comprehensive fitness program. Great news for those of us who thought building a great body was all hard work!

Before making an appointment with the first massage therapist you encounter, however, be sure they are a qualified bodywork practitioner. Ask for referrals, professional training information, and certification credentials from a reputable agency, such as the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Could You Have Lyme and Not Know It?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 12:02 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2008

If you have ever been bitten by a tick, flea, mosquito, gnat, or mite or have been sexually active with someone who has been bitten, then you are at risk for Lyme Disease. Lyme can also be transmitted from mother to unborn child and through breast-feeding. Contaminated food can also pass along the disease.

Forget what you have been told about “bulls-eye” rashes and deep woods excursions - they only make up a small percentage of the population infected by Lyme. Lyme Disease is not rare. It is an epidemic. Lyme disease and the inflammation produced because of it are also most likely a factor in the severity of many individuals’ autoimmune symptoms - if not the cause. (The Lyme Disease “outbreak” of the mid-1970’s caused arthritis.) According to the renowned Dr. Cowden, “…more than 50% of chronically ill people may have Lyme contributing to their condition”. (http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/25/lyme_disease.htm)

Lyme, which was not even recognized in the United States until 1975, may be one of the most misunderstood and devastating diseases of our day. The test normally used to detect Lyme disease is extremely unreliable. This test does not look for the Lyme causing borreliosis bacteria. Instead, the test looks for the antibodies that your body has produced against Lyme causing bacteria. The problem is that Lyme can go undetected by your immune system for a long period of time, so those antibodies are not produced against it. Even after antibodies are produced, they are generally found in the tissue, not the blood of an infected person. The result is a negative blood test even if Lyme is present all over the body. Many organ systems can be invaded before an infected person even feels any symptoms. Some will never feel symptoms. (http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/25/lyme_disease.htm)

Dr. Jo Anne Whitaker (no known relation to the author) developed a test that looks for the Lyme borreliosis bacteria, not the antibody. Dr. Whitaker’s lab has tested thousands of people for the presence of Lyme causing bacteria. Every test performed by her lab since 1999 has been positive for Lyme disease.

Lyme causes autoimmunity in the brain and central nervous system, not just the joints. It can mimic MS, Chronic Fatigue, and many mental illnesses.

The Tribrain and Trauma Therapy

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 9:27 pm on Saturday, November 22, 2008

When someone experiences a trauma they go into immediate shock. This is very similar to hypnosis. Under hypnosis a person is more suggestible and tends to remember everything that occurred while in that state, even if it is on a subconscious level. Because of this a person, when abused, will remember vividly everything about what it was to feel like a victim and they will also remember everything about what it is like to be an abuser.

When an event is traumatic and confusing enough, we tend to internalize it in a futile attempt to control or master it. In some cases a victim will subconsciously embrace the victims’ role and will tend to be drawn towards abusers and feel sorry for them. Others embrace the abusers role and then act it out on others. Some people do a bit of both.

This tendency is the origin of Freud’s repetition compulsion. It is a misguided attempt at the concept of mastery. When we cannot master a task we become obsessed with the task until we figure out what we have done wrong and thereby solve the problem. Concept of mastery is one of the major ways that human beings learn.

A repetition compulsion however, is simply doing the same thing over and over again. A person who has been abused often feels at fault for the abuse and therefore subconsciously chooses abusers even when consciously trying to pick a kind and healthy person. This is healthy learning gone awry.

To understand the dynamics of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder one has to understand how the three brains and the body work. The Cerebrum and Prefrontal Cortex are the human part of the brain and operate by rational thought. This brain is linear and causal and therefore if something is explained to this part of the brain and a person agrees then they will follow those directions voluntarily. It is the conscious part of our brain. This is the part of our brain that traditional psychotherapy or talk therapy is aimed at. The Limbic system is an older part of the brain that is similar to all mammals’ brains. It is made up mostly of chemicals called Neurotransmitters that help us think and feel, but not necessarily on a logical basis.

The third brain is the Medulla Oblongata and is located at the base of the skull. It is a brain which we share with all Reptiles. It deals with instincts and unconscious processes. It is definitely not rational in the way it thinks.

All the cells in the body are connected and are capable of body memory and therefore are all minute brains. Candice Pert, the discoverer of Endorphins and the Enkephalin System, postulates that our feelings are in some way yet to be understood, involved with the Enkephalin System that is located in every cell of our body. She believes that this web of endorphins/feelings constitute a highly evolved, yet intricate brain system. In a real sense each cell is composed of a primary primitive brain. Often these brains work quicker than the others that I have mentioned.

All the brains, except the Human one, work on the basis of Pavlov’s dog or conditioning. If something is repeated enough or is so powerful in its effect that learning gets imprinted it becomes very hard to dislodge it even when situations change.

That is why feelings or habits change so slowly after the unconscious thoughts have already changed. Without some kind of intervention to change or block the stimulus/response dynamic, those more primitive brains and the body often will lag 2-5 years behind the Cerebrum and at times will remain active indefinitely. This is why people find it so hard to change and are often confused and frustrated by their inability to do so. This can make people who are quite intelligent unable to fix a problem and they therefore conclude that they must be stupid or lazy. That is not the case.

There are three major ways to effect change quicker and less painfully than traditional psychotherapy, which works for the most part only with the human brain.

The first technique is Hypnosis. Since people are more sensitive and suggestible under hypnosis this is often an effective way to cut the stimulus/response patterns. A clinician can ask the client to experience the past painful experience with a greater sense of calm or with more effective skills than they had as a child. This alters the experience of the original trauma itself. Hypnosis can be quite beneficial, but does not seem to be as helpful as some of the newer techniques listed below. It appears that the newer models of therapy often produce more congruence and longer lasting change than I have found with hypnosis. It also takes longer and is less versatile.

The second way is EMDR, which is an effective and quick way to deal with trauma and is widely practiced. It is a new therapy that is fast and relatively painless. It is based on the theory that REM or rapid eye movements, which occur during dreaming, is the way that our brain shifts short-term memory to long-term memory. Long-term memory doesn’t have much emotion or immediacy connected to it. Clients hold the most salient aspect of the trauma in their mind as the therapist moves a couple of fingers of their hand in front of their face to induce rapid eye movements. This seems to recreate the trauma and cause a mini abreaction. After just a few sessions clients usually report remembering the trauma without the emotion.

The third and fourth ways are sister therapies, but Neuro Emotional Technique or NET is by far the more sophisticated, versatile, and effective. Neuro Emotional Technique or NET was originally practiced by chiropractors and only later taught to mental health therapists. It is still very difficult to find a counselor proficient in this technique as yet. It is based on Chinese medicine and the Acupuncture and Meridian Systems. It allows a clinician to follow the body’s own present traumas and feelings and discover whether these feelings might be related to past traumas. It then enables a clinician to tap lightly on a few points of the body around the spine and the toxic memory is released. This allows the affected person to be more fully in the present adult mode where effective action and change is easier to initiate. If a persons’ adult abandonment feelings are complicated by feeling the abandonment they felt when they were 10 years old, a person will be less competent in the present situation. NET releases old and present traumas residing in the body quickly and effectively.

TFT, or Thought Field Therapy, which is also based on the Meridian System, is another quick and painless therapy and more clinicians are trained in this technique. It is not as versatile as NET and its diagnostic abilities are limited in my opinion, but it relieves some fears and phobias quite effectively by tapping on various acupressure points.

All of these “power therapies” seem to work to effect change on levels other than the conscious plane. They are often quicker and more effective than traditional forms of therapy. This is because they focus on the more primitive brains, which are not usually reached by older therapy models. I believe fully that insight is important and this is often provided by traditional counseling, but change is not as quick or complete without accessing the more fundamental brains. This is done most efficiently by the newer therapies.
